Okon, a mother of four, was said to have wept publicly and threatened to commit suicide when she went to purchase some foodstuff for her children and was told that a cup of garri was N100.
Speaking to newsmen in Uyo yesterday, Rotarian Akan Emah, who reached the widow on behalf of Jacob, disclosed that the donor saw the video online and moved by the plight of the widow and directed him to immediately identify the widow and link him up to assist her.
Making the presentation of the relief materials, which included foodstuff and cash on behalf of the philanthropist, Emah urged the widow not to contemplate suicide but wholly put her trust in God who is more than able to preserve her and her family.
Emah reminded the widow that she had a moral duty and social responsibility to live in order to take care of her four kids, charging her to imagine what life for them without her would be if it was this rough with her around.
He further disclosed that Apostle Jacob had offered full scholarship to one of her children and charged her to ensure the monies sent for the child’s education were not diverted for other purposes.
Rotarian Emah, who said that the state government could not do everything, enjoined privileged citizens and organisations to reach out to the distressed and needy in the society.
Responding, Mrs Okon, who said her husband died in 2015 leaving behind four children, thanked Apostle Jacob for intervening in her situation all the way from the USA and prayed God to bless him.
Jacob, who had interacted with the widow via video call, encouraged her to be strong, explaining that he was raised up by his widowed mother and having seen her struggles through life, made a life commitment to assist distressed widows.
It would be recalled that Mrs Okon was recorded by people on a video which went viral following the lockdown of Akwa Ibom by the government as a means to curb the outbreak of COVID-19.
