Some of these women have been convicted and given the death sentences but none has raised as much dust as the Maryam Sanda case, probably because of the high profile nature of the victim and the convict.
Maryam’s mother was the former Managing Director of Aso Savings, a government owned parastatal while Bilyaminu was the nephew of one-time National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP.
No wonder the frenzy about Maryam’s conviction.
However, we bring you a list of 10 prominent Nigerian women who killed their husbands in the past few years.
1. Rachael Adetsav
Rachal Adetsav, a native of Benue state, reportedly clobbered her husband to death in 2015 before killing her three children and later committing suicide.
The story behind Rachael’s act was said to have been predicated on the fact that her husband was dating another woman and had concluded plans to marry the woman as a second wife, something that did not sit well with Rachael.
After they had engaged in serous fights over the matter, Rachael went overboard and decided to wipe out the whole family instead of allowing her husband marry another wife.
According to neighbours, Racheal was seen with a pestle trying to smash her husband’s car but was stopped, only for them to wake up the next morning to meet the colossal disaster of a whole family wiped out.
When the police got to the scene of crime, they found the husband foaming in the mouth, the three kids already dead, and Rachael also dead with a bloodied knife still clutched in her hands.
2. Eki Ekhator
Another woman who killed her husband was one Eki Ekhator who was later arrested by the Edo State Police Command.
It was gathered that Eki had violently grabbed her husband by the scrotum and squeezed it till he died.by
The incident which happened at the Ukhiri community in the Ikpoba-Okha local government area of the state, sent shock waves down the spines of residents who rushed the man to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.
Eki was said to have regularly had misunderstandings with her husband anytime he returned home late by accusing him of having affairs with other women.
On the day of the incident, the husband had come home late again and a quarrel ensued between them leading to him slapping Eki. The angry wife then reached for his trouser and held on to his scrotum in a violent manner, leading to his death.
3. Udeme Otike-Odibi
Two years ago, Udeme Otike-Odibi, a prominent Lagos-based lawyer, had also murdered her husband, Symphorosa Otike-Odibi, in the most gruesome manner anyone could ever think of in their Shangetedo, Lekki home.
Symphorosa, also a lawyer, was stabbed several times by Udeme who went ahead to cut his private part and placed it in his hand before calmly picking up her phone to call her mother and a close friend to inform them of what she had done.
Udeme who was supposed to travel to the UK the day she killed her husband, was later arrested and in her confessional statement to the police, said she killed Symphorosa because he was having extra-marital affairs and whenever she raised the issue with him, his responses were not satisfactory.
4. Singe Auta Dogo
Singe Auta Dogo was a simple housewife in Bagudo local government area of Kebbi State before she became a national sensation after she killed her husband so she could go back to her former lover.
According to the police, Singe had conspired with one Garba Hassan and Sahabi Garba to kill her husband, Abdullahi Shaho, so she could remarry her former husband, Idris Garba.
Singe was arrested alongside the men she conspired with to kill her husband in such a gruesome manner.
5. Ajemine Douglas
Ajemenie Douglas, a 41-year-old woman, was arrested by the operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abalama, Rivers State, after she allegedly contracted one Kingsley Nna to kill her husband, Inedugoba Tyger.
After she was arrested, Ajemine, a mother of four and a staff of the Rivers State Primary Health Care, confessed to the crime and took the detectives to a shallow grave where the deceased was buried.
In her confession to the police, Ajemine said she killed her husband because he had abandoned her to go and live with another woman.
6. Temitope Adebamiro
Another Nigerian woman who killed her husband over infidelity clams was Temitope Adebamiro who stabbed her husband, Adeyinka Adebamiro, a few years ago.
Temitope and her husband, Adeyinka, were based in the United Kingdom when she committed the murder and after her arrest, she told the Newcastle County police that her husband cheated severally on her, including with her sister and their nanny’s daughter.
She, however, did not own up to the crime, initially claiming her husband stabbed himself after a distress call to the police from the couple’s 1300 block of Healy Court home discovered Adeyinka in a pool of blood and a knife pierced into his neck.
He died a few hours later in a hospital where he was rushed to.
Temitope told investigators her husband had been cheating on her with various women and had ordered her back to Nigeria multiple times to enable him time to frolic with the women.
7. Enobong Isonguyo
Another pathetic case of a gruesome husband killing was that of one Enobong Isonguyo who conspired with her pastor-lover to kill her husband in Edo State.
Enobong, according to the police, was sleeping with pastor of her church and when she discovered that she was pregnant for the pastor, they conspired to kill her husband to clear the way for them to get married and also take over his properties.
A police report on the incident had stated that Enobong had told the pastor to wait on the route her husband was taking to work and ask him for a ride.
The plan paid off as the deceased eventually stopped and gave the pastor a ride along the Sapele-Benin road.
During the journey, the pastor brought out a sharp object and hit the deceased on his neck before pouring petrol on the car and set it on fire, burning the deceased beyond recognition.
It was further established that millions of Naira and landed properties belonging to the deceased were transferred to the said pastor by the wife. Enobong was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging.
8. Wasilat Tasi’u
Wasilat Tasiu was a mere 14-year-old girl when she killed her 35-year-old husband, Umar Sani, in a desperate attempt set herself free from a forced marriage.
Wasilat who was later sentenced to death for the murder, had told the Kano State high court that she was in love with another man but that her parents forced her to marry Sani and to get out of the forced marriage, she had to kill him.
Her sentence caused a lot of uproar with the United Nations weighing in on the matter and called on the Nigerian government to set her free as she was still a minor.
A Nigerian activist, Zubeida Nagee, also led a protest and sent a strong-worded letter to the state deputy governor with the famous words:
“She was married to a man that she didn’t love. She protested but her parents forced her to marry him.”
9. Augustina Ihugba
Augustina Ihugba, a mother of four, also became infamous after she killed her husband, Raymond Ihugba, in the Owerri North Council area of Imo State.
It was gathered that Augustina had been abused by her husband for years until she snapped and killed him by bathing him with acid before setting his body on fire.
A police report stated that Raymond, had gone to his building site one morning not knowing that his wife had trailed him to the site and poured the corrosive substance on him before going ahead to burn his body beyond recognition.
10. Yewande Oyediran
Yewande Oyediran, an Ibadan, Oyo State-based lawyer, is another prominent Nigerian woman who killed her husband, Lowo Oyediran, by stabbing him severally with a scissors after she had accused him of infidelity and fathering a child a white woman in his base in France.
Yewande, an assistant director in the Oyo State Ministry of Justice, was alleged to have stabbed the France-based businessman to death during a domestic scuffle in their house at the Adeniyi Layout, Ibadan, on February 2, 2016.
On November 27, 2017, Yewande was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment but in 2019, she was granted amnesty by the Oyo State governor and released from prison, leading to a series of protests with many saying her family used their influence to get her freed from prison.
